‘First bring peace in Ladakh, then relations will improve…’ NSA Ajit Doval told Chinese diplomat

Johannesburg. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met China’s top diplomat Wang Yi in Johannesburg, South Africa. During this, he stressed the need to continue efforts to restore peace and tranquility in the border areas, so that the ‘obstacles’ to the normalization of relations between India and China could be removed.

This meeting of Ajit Doval and Wang Yi took place on the sidelines of ‘Friends of BRICS’ meeting in Johannesburg on Monday. Regarding this, a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said, in the meeting, Doval said that strategic trust and public and political relations have weakened since 2020 due to the situation on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the western sector on the India-China border.

‘India-China relations important for the world’
According to the statement, they underlined the importance of continuing efforts to restore peace and tranquility in the border areas and resolve the situation so as to remove “obstacles” to the normalization of bilateral relations. It said that both sides agreed that India-China bilateral relations are important not only for the two countries but also for the region and the world.

Wang is the director of the Foreign Affairs Commission Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Doval and his meeting took place a few days after the meeting between Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Wang in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. Jaishankar and Wang discussed pending issues related to peace and tranquility in the border areas.

The military standoff between India and China has been going on in eastern Ladakh for the last three years. Jaishankar has described it as the most complex challenge of his long diplomatic career. India has made it clear that until peace is maintained in the border area, bilateral relations cannot be normal.

China emphasized on increasing strategy confidence
On the other hand, according to China’s official news agency ‘Xinhua’, in the meeting with Doval, Wang said that the two countries should enhance mutual strategic trust, focus on consensus and cooperation, remove obstacles and put bilateral relations on the path of strong and stable development as soon as possible.

According to ‘Xinhua’, Wang stressed that China would never seek hegemony and was willing to work with other developing countries, including India, to support multilateralism and democratization of international relations and promote a more equitable development of the international order.

Earlier, Doval called for a collective effort to deal with the challenges posed by cyber security at the ‘Friends of BRICS’ meeting on Monday. The NSA also held several bilateral discussions with its counterparts from BRICS and ‘Friends of BRICS’ group of countries. South Africa will host the BRICS summit next month. BRICS countries include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
