New Delhi. Renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Oppenheimer’ has become popular all over the world and the film is in discussion in India as well. The film is based on American scientist and father of the atomic bomb, J.J. Based on the life of Robert Oppenheimer. After his controversial downfall, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru offered him Indian citizenship. He had asked Oppenheimer whether he would like to be an Indian? This happened when Oppenheimer was abandoned by his own country.

The role of the American scientist in the film ‘Oppenheimer’ has once again come in front of the world. The film is based on a book co-written by Kai Byrd and Martin J. Sherwin titled American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. He was involved in the “Manhattan Project” that developed the world’s first atomic bomb. It was the same bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in 1945. Oppenheimer was an outspoken advocate of anti-war policies and nuclear reductions.

Made statements against American defense policy
Oppenheimer believed that the basic concepts of United States defense policy at the time were full of ‘ignorance and stupidity’. Due to his public rhetoric against nuclear weapons, he came into conflict with the US establishment of the time during the Cold War era. Subsequently in 1954, Pandit Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, offered Indian citizenship to Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer was deeply patriotic
According to American scientist Kai Byrd, author of “American Prometheus”, Oppenheimer did not consider the proposal. Bird told Hindustan Times in an interview, ‘In 1954 his [ओपेनहाइमर] After being humiliated…Nehru offered him to come to India and become a citizen…but I don’t think Oppenheimer seriously considered this (offer) because he was a deeply patriotic American.’
