New Delhi. ChatPGPT, who gives instant answers to your every question, wastes so much water every day, than you can even imagine. A research has revealed that ChatGPT requires half a liter of water to answer a chat of 20-50 questions. Actually ChatGPT needs water to keep its ‘mind’ cool. This is the brain, its data center. Big servers in data centers get very hot. To keep them cool, the running equipment needs a lot of water. Not only ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and other AI tools are also using a lot of water.
In the research paper ‘Making AI less thirsty: Uncovering and addressing the secret water footprint of AI models’ by University of Colorado Riverside and University of Texas Arlington, it has been told that AI chatbots are drinking a lot of water while answering your questions. AI servers operate best at 10-27°C. The temperature rises due to the energy coming out of the machines. To maintain this temperature range, server farms employ large cooling towers. Water is needed to cool these cooling towers.

7 lakh liters of water was consumed in training itself
The researcher found that 7 lakh liters of water was needed for the training of GPT-3 in Microsoft’s US data center. This much water is used to make 370 BMW cars and 320 Tesla electric cars. Had this training been done in the Asian data center of the company, the water consumption would have reached 21 lakh litres. The talk does not end only on training. AI tools ‘drink’ a lot of water even while answering your questions. ChatGPT consumes half a liter of water just in answering 20-50 questions in one conversation.
Bard is also drinking a lot of water
It is not that only ChatGPT is wasting water. Google’s Bard is also not behind in the use of water. The researcher found that in the year 2022, 15 billion gallons of water were consumed in Google’s global data center. In the year 2021, the company used 1.25 billion liters of water.
